1789
Massachusetts in 1789
The 1789 contest saw Massachusetts line up behind Washington, delivering 10 electoral votes to the Independent ticket. That placed Massachusetts with the eventual winner: George Washington went on to take the presidency, and Massachusetts was part of his column.
1789 was the first presidential election in which Massachusetts cast electoral votes. Massachusetts did not move alone — neighboring Connecticut, New York, and New Hampshire broke the same way in 1789. Over its 60 recorded presidential cycles, Massachusetts has backed the Democratic party more than any other — 23 times in all. The vote fell within the First Party System — Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans.
Nationally, George Washington finished with 69 of the 138 electoral votes to John Adams's 34.
