1789
Delaware in 1789
The 1789 contest saw Delaware line up behind Washington, delivering 3 electoral votes to the Independent ticket. Delaware ended up on the winning side — George Washington captured the White House that year.
1789 was the first presidential election in which Delaware cast electoral votes. Delaware did not move alone — neighboring Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey broke the same way in 1789. Across the 60 presidential elections Delaware has taken part in, it has most often sided with the Democratic party (23 times). The vote fell within the First Party System — Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans.
In the national count, George Washington took 69 of the 138 electoral votes, against John Adams's 34.
